Fullmetal Alchemist (Japanese: 鋼の錬金術師, Hepburn: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi , lit. "Alchemist of Steel") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa. It was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan shōnen manga anthology magazine between July 2001 and June 2010; the publisher later collected the private capacity into twenty-7 tankōbon volumes. The steampunk world of Fullmetal Alchemist is primarily styled after the European Industrial Revolution. Set in the early 20th century, in a fictional universe in which alchemy is a widely practiced science, the series follows the journey of ii alchemist brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, who are searching for the philosopher's stone to restore their bodies afterwards a failed attempt to bring their mother back to life using alchemy.

Subsequently reading about the concept of the Philosopher'due south Stone, Arakawa became attracted to the thought of her characters using abracadabra in the manga. She started reading books about alchemy, which she constitute complicated because some books contradict others. Arakawa oversaw the story and designed the characters for the RPG games, while Bones—the studio responsible for the anime serial—produced several animation sequences. The developers looked at other titles—specifically Square Enix's action office-playing game Kingdom Hearts and other games based on manga serial, such equally Dragon Brawl, Naruto or I Piece games—for inspiration.
